Easy & Tasty Taco Seasoning – Make It Yourself
I started making homemade taco seasoning several years ago. It was one of the best food decisions I’d made. Simply put: it tastes great. My son just told me, “It tastes sooo good! All I want to do is eat taco meat!!” And so easy to make! I’ve even given it as a Christmas gift to some of my real food loving friends.
If you haven’t tried homemade taco seasoning, you should. There are so many wonderful reasons to make it yourself.
When my kids were younger, they didn’t care for anything remotely spicy. Making it myself allowed me to control how spicy the food would be. Even the mild seasoning packets were met with screams of “Too SPICY!!!!!!”
And not only that, it was a huge money saver. Those little packets of taco or burrito seasoning added up! Especially since we had burritos at least once a week and I always made enough for lots of left-overs. We loved taking it as burrito bowl lunches during the work week or adding the meat to a quesadilla for a weekend lunch. I needed about 3 packets each time I made it, so I felt like I was always racing to the store in search of them. Switching to a DIY taco seasoning meant that I could always have some on hand or whip up a quick batch.
Since I need to watch the ingredients of foods that I eat, I love that I can eat this without fear of getting sick. No hidden corn, soy, or gluten. I often buy my herbs and spices in the bulk bins. I find this to be way cheaper. But I can also cut out ingredients that my body is not okay with. Be sure to check the ingredient lists even in the bulk bins. Sometimes you might find additives that you are not happy with. In that case, go for a pre-packaged or organic equivalent that is additive free.
This seasoning recipe is so simple and easy to modify to your taste. If you like it spicy, just add more crushed red pepper. And though the salt content of this seasoning is way less than those little packets, you can always reduce or remove it, if you so desire. In a lot of cases, the amount of sodium in one taco/burrito seasoning packet (for use with 1 lb of meat) is about the same or more than this entire recipe, which I’d say would be enough to season about 4 lbs of meat.

Homemade gluten free, soy free, corn free Taco Seasoning. So easy to make! So tasty!
- 4 Tbsp chili powder
- 2 Tbsp cumin
- 2 tsp paprika
- 2 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp crushed red pepper
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1 tsp salt
Mix all ingredients together. I like to put them in a bowl or jar with lid so I can just shake it up. Store in an airtight container to keep fresh.
Use approximately 2 Tbsp (or to taste) for 1 pound of ground beef, turkey or chicken. (I usually add about 1/4 cup water to the cooked, seasoned meat and mix thoroughly for even distribution.) You can use it to make tacos, burritos, add to soup or really any recipe that calls for a taco or burrito seasoning packet.
