Easy Trolls Hair Headbands
For my daughter’s 5th birthday party we made these super cute and easy Trolls Hair Headbands. As a not-so-crafty mom, I tend to look for easy wins when it comes to party favors. The Troll Hair Headbands were made for people like me! Actually, my 7 year old daughter helped me make the headbands, so kids can make these too!
You can always up the craft level by making your own flowers or adding extra ribbons. Trolls Hair Headbands definitely work for any crafting level.

You only really need a couple supplies to make them:
Tulle (6-inch width), cut into 22-25” strips
Ribbon, cut into 22-25” pieces
You can get any headband that you like; I chose a satin headband that had a 1 cm width (we used these). You can always get plastic headbands, satin isn’t required. I just thought that the satin would be nicer on the kids’ heads. I would not suggest a headband that is thinner than 1 cm (about 1/3 inch) just because you wouldn’t see the pretty effect of the knots as well.
I ordered this multi pack of tulle so that I could have a variety of colors to pick from. I made 14 headbands and I had a ton of tulle left over. If you are making more headbands or decide to make the hair longer or add more knots of tulle to your Troll hair headband, then you will be happy that you had the extra. As it is, I foresee more Troll hair being made at home for play time, that will help use it up. Or we will use it for future (easy) crafts. You’ll find that cutting the tulle is the most time-consuming part of this. Since you need 10-11 pieces (or more if you so desire) per headband, there is lots of cutting to do.
I also ordered a variety pack of ribbon so we would again have lots of colors to choose from. We used 3/8” ribbon, which I think it was the perfect width. If you only want to use 1 color, just make sure you are purchasing enough to tie all the Troll hair. I tried cutting the ribbons shorter (14 inches), but I was barely able to make a bow and it was pretty small. You live and you learn! I found that I prefer having the ribbon in the 22-25” length so that you have a nice pretty bow.
I actually bought rubber bands to put in the hair to hold it in place and then tie the ribbon over it. But I found that the rubber bands weren’t really needed if you make a nice tight bow, so I’m returning those. (Yay for saving money!)
There are a lot of flower options out there that can be used to decorate the Troll hair. I pre-made the headbands and just let the kids pick their own ribbon and decorate with flowers during the party.
I picked these flowers because there were enough for the all kids to use multiple flowers to decorate their Troll hair and not run out. Because I was using them as a birthday party activity, I didn’t go for anything too fancy or that would require more than standard Elmer’s glue. But you can fancy them up if you’d like and use a hot glue gun to make sure they are really secure.
DIY Trolls Hair Headband Instructions
I’m sure you are all ready to know how to make Trolls Hair Headbands! So here are the super easy steps to do it yourself:
- Cut tulle into 22-25” strips.
- Fold tulle strip in half, then knot the tulle around the hairband by putting the folded end under the hairband and pulling the cut end through the loop created. Pull nice and tight.
- Use 10-11 tulle strips on each headband. (Note: make sure you knot them all going the same direction so it has a consistent look and the hair all leans in the same direction)
- Cut ribbon into 22-25” pieces
- Tie ribbon ½ to ⅔ the way up the Troll hair.
- Decorate with flowers. Use Elmer’s glue if you are letting kids glue on the flowers or adults can use a hot glue gun to secure the flowers in place.
There you go! The most adorable Easy Trolls Hair Headbands you could ask for. Go all pink, just like Princess Poppy, or mix and match colors of tulle and ribbon to make them you own!
